Former Scandal star Nthati Moshesh on being broke

Being an actor in South Africa is not always easy – just ask industry veteran Nthati Moshesh.

Despite being a well-established actress, with more than two decades of experience under her belt, Nthati was so broke that she had to turn to family members for help.

She went through the difficult patch after leaving Saints and Sinners in 2018.

Speaking to Drum magazine in a recent interview, Nthati says that she was unemployed for eight months.

“You know how our industry works – if you don’t work, you don’t eat. My finances were shocking. I had maxed out my credit card and I was relying on my family for handouts. Man, you have no idea,” she said.

The actress added that she came very close to quitting showbiz.

“I honestly wanted to give up acting. I felt there was something else out there that could bring me more money,” she told the publication.

Things are looking up for the star after a tough 2018. Earlier this month, she was unveiled as a new cast member on hit prison drama, Lockdown.

Shortly after making her debut on the show, Nthati told the Sunday World that the role of cult leader, Masabatha, was initially for someone else.

“It was my luck. I got the call and learnt hours before the time that the character was blind. I was in panic mode. I know nothing about blind people. I’m a method person and prefer being prepared. But it was a welcome challenge,” she said.

She might have once considered giving up acting, but Nthati has been given a new lease on life.

“I will stop acting when I am 97. That’s my cut off. I don’t dream about producing or directing or anything else… acting is my passion. Even [if] it means going months without work, what is meant to be always comes around,” she told the publication.
