The River: Fans Wants Lindiwe To Go And Here Is Why

Fans of the multi-award-winning telenovela; The River, took to social media last week to have an open discussion about the much loved and hated award-winning actress’s character; Lindiwe Dikana played by Sindi Dlathu. While many agree the actress is incredibly talented and applauded her acting, they all concurred that she’s absolutely toxic and triggers their terrible upbringing.

1. She’s damaged and everyone around her is damaged because of her.

When Andile came out, she forced him to get married to a woman and was homophobic, unkind and unloving towards him. Andile was no longer her golden boy but a project that needed to be fixed. When he confronted her about her verbal abuse and her unkindness, she sent him to therapy with his ex-fiancé, instead of going to therapy with her son and seeking therapy for her own traumas. What about that time she buried her daughter Tumi alive and told her that she regretted not terminating her? Tumi’s marriage is suffering because she doesn’t know how to love her husband. Even though she was raised by the Mokoena’s finding out Lindiwe was her mother, turned Tumi into her mother’s shadow.

2. She’s overwhelmingly controlling.

When Zolani tried to move on with Emma, she wouldn’t have it. She sabotaged Zo’s happiness over and over again because she wants him to herself. Emma wasn’t perfect but Lindiwe doesn’t allow her loved ones to figure out their own mistakes and learn from them because she’s constantly controlling everyone. When she and her husband were separated and he tried to move on, she killed his wife. If she and her husband were meant-to-be, she could’ve left his new wife alone and let him figure out his way out the marriage.

3. She’s predictable

It was all fun and games in the beginning until fans realised the show is centred on her. She’s become immortal and an irritant because we know what the end goal is; she’s going to win. How refreshing would it be if Lindiwe could sit back and say “you know what, I have a problem, I’m not perfect and I’m wrong.” A strong woman acknowledges her weaknesses and doesn’t hide her fears behind violence and anger.

While Phathu Makwarela(the creator, producer and writer) hasn’t replied to this on-going discussion on social media, many River fans hope that there would be changes implemented to Sindi Dlathu’s character.
