We might know her on Uzalo as MaMlambo, one of villain, Nkunzi’s women and wives.
However actress Gugu Gumede has quite the pedigree and comes from a family of prominent political figures.
What some fans might now know is, Gugu Gumede’s real life mom is none other than Mzansi’s former cabinet minister Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi.
Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi is the National Freedom Party leader and SA’s former Deputy Minister of Science and Technology.
Her late father was Simon Hulumeni Gumede who was the member of the KZN legislature and of IFP. Sadly he died in a car accident in 2017.
Zanele served in former South African President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet
Gugu Gumede was raised in a single parent household by her mom, after she separated from Simon.
Zanele once admitted that she did not want her daughter to pursue an acting career initially.
She wanted Gugu to pursue a law degree, however she was supportive of her daughter once if was clear that she wanted to venture into film.

I wanted them to have stable” careers’ that would’ve granted them consistent financial stability, but as I watched them progress, I realised that this was not what they wanted
Zanele then supported Gugu’s dream and had her enrolled at American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles.
Gugu Gumede has a close bond with her mother and said she and her brother never felt lack of love and attention from their mom.
My brother and I would hide when my mother pulled in her car, and she would come in and look for us. Upon finding us, she would tickle us and we would have the biggest laugh
Although coming from a political house has its pressures, Gugu Gumede managed to override them and become her own woman.
