South African musician, Prince Kaybee, shared an image of himself on social media today, 18 September 2020, which saw him casually posing in his kitchen. The picture, which was intended to show that he was detoxing, also happened to show off his SMEG fridge, which costs approximately R47 000.
The appliance brand has become somewhat of a status symbol in Mzansi, as many believe only the rich-rich can afford it. Whilst other celebrities opt for the equally luxurious kettle or toaster, many believed that Prince Kaybee was over-flexing with his ludicrously expensive fridge. He even retweeted a fan who stated, “I think this is the only acceptable SMEG flex I’ve seen on Twitter.”
In July 2020, Prince Kaybee’s nemesis, DJ Maphorisa was also brought into a SMEG debacle, after he shared visuals of himself in his kitchen. The twitter streets dragged Lawd Porry for wearing designer drip and having such a small kitchen, dirty dishes overflowing in his sink, and the lack of SMEG appliances.
The criticism caused for him to retake the picture of his kitchen in a much better state, with no dirty dishes in the sink or any laundry on the side of the washing machine. To further emphasise that he values the opinion of his fans, the picture also showed the addition of SMEG appliances, such as a toaster and a kettle as well.
Somizi had also fawned over his multiple SMEG appliances found around his kitchen, which many have deemed a symbol of his wealth.
