Actor Cebo Mthembu who portrays the role of Captain Nyawo from KwaMashu on SABC 1 soapie Uzalo is a multi-talented individual. Apart from playing the role of the much loved Captain Nyawo who keeps viewers enthralled with his pompous high sounding English, Mthembu is actually a qualified electrical engineer in real life.
Mthembu who hails from the far north coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal studied Electrical Engineering and is employed by the country’s power utility Eskom. At Eskom, Mthembu holds the position of a technician inspector which means that he is one of the people who respond to and attends to electrical faults.
At the time of publishing, it was not yet clear how the talented jack of trades if able to juggle his two demanding jobs as an electrical engineer and as an actor on the country’s most-watched soapie Uzalo.
Captain Nyawo initially started off being underappreciated by viewers. However, he became more prominent when his character was promoted to the role of captain. This allowed Mthembu to wow viewers with his prodigious lexicon which has since earned him the nickname, Mr Oxford Dictionary.
Captain Nyawo also exhibits a wicked sense of humour and has become a firm fan favourite, with viewers of the show always joking that they need to keep their dictionaries handy when the comical police officer is speaking.
Away from the small screen, Mthembu is also an avid fitness fanatic who is into numerous sports. He loves running and is a passionate athlete. The electrical engineer completed the Comrades Marathon in 2018 and is working on beating his own time.
Mthembu is also quite religious and is a devoted member of his church and one of the choir members.
