A petition demanding that teenage pregnancy be made a reportable offense in South Africa has garnered hundreds of signatures.
The petition calls for mandatory reporting of all minor pregnancies by medical health professionals to the police.
Latest data shows that 67,000 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 gave birth in 2020.
This rate, at 62 births per 1,000 women in this age group, exceeds the global average of 44 births.
Between March 2021 and April 2022, 90,037 girls aged between 10 and 19 gave birth across all provinces.
