How to Apply for a Smart ID Online in South Africa: Steps and Costs

A Guide For Applying A Smart ID Online In South Africa

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) in South Africa is requiring approximately 1 million citizens to apply for a smart ID online.

This follows the DHA’s efforts to combat fraudulent ID numbers.

If you find yourself in need of a smart ID, whether due to this requirement or because your ID was lost or stolen, this guide will walk you through the process and costs involved.

The Transition from Green Mamba to Smart ID

The Smart ID card was introduced by the DHA in 2013, replacing the traditional ‘green mamba’ ID booklet.

By the end of 2023, the old green ID booklets will be phased out, making it necessary for those still using them to apply for a smart ID online.
