Tragedy at MUT: Engineering Student Succumbs to Lightning Strike
Over the weekend, Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) confirmed the heartbreaking loss of a student struck by lightning.
The South African Weather Service had predicted severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
Mpumezi Mndwentywa, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student, fell victim to a lightning strike.
The university revealed that severe thunderstorms led to a fire affecting rooms on the third floor of the off-campus residence in Glenwood.
Tragically, Mndwetywa, who was asleep during the incident, succumbed to the burns sustained from the lightning strike.
MUT’s Dean of Students, Dr. Thembi Kweyama, expressed condolences, and plans for counseling services for affected students are underway.
