Ramaphosa Announces General Election Date: Here's What You Need to Know

The wait is finally over! President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially announced the date for the much-anticipated general election, scheduled to take place on 29 May 2024.

This significant decision aligns with the constitutional mandates outlined in Section 49 (2) of the South African Constitution and Section 17 of the Electoral Act of 1988.

In a statement released by the presidency, it was revealed that President Ramaphosa held a crucial meeting with all nine provincial premiers and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to assess the nation’s readiness for the upcoming elections.

As South Africa gears up to mark 30 years of freedom and democracy, President Ramaphosa has emphasized the importance of citizen participation in shaping the nation’s future through the ballot box.

He urged all eligible voters to exercise their democratic right and make their voices heard during this pivotal moment in the country’s history.

Furthermore, the president called upon political parties to conduct their campaigns peacefully and lawfully, fostering a conducive environment for robust political discourse.

For those who have not yet registered to vote, President Ramaphosa encouraged them to utilize the online registration platform before the proclamation date, which will be announced in the Government Gazette.

Once proclaimed, voter registration will cease.

Notably, the IEC reported a significant milestone with over 27.4 million registered voters following registration weekends held in November and February.

This highlights the eagerness of South Africans to actively participate in shaping the future of their nation.

As the nation prepares for the upcoming elections, all eyes will be on the democratic process, reflecting the enduring spirit of democracy and the collective aspirations of the South African people.
