DJ Fresh and Euphonik have been fired from their jobs by Primedia Broadcasting following the r_pe allegations levelled against the pair. DJ Fresh (real name Thato Sikwane) and DJ Euphonik (real name Themba Nkosi) were employed by music radio station 947 which is owned by Primedia Broadcasting.
The DJs fell from grace when they brought the station and the company into disrepute after the two well-known radio personalities were accused of drugging and raping a university student at a party back in 2011.
The alleged victim made a series of posts on social media platform Twitter in which she accused the pair of raping her and laughing about it afterwards. She went on to say that at the time of the alleged r_pe she was still a virgin and that she is now taking anti-anxiety medication due to the trauma.
A day after the police in Gauteng confirmed opening a formal r_pe case against them, the two DJs were forced to step down from their respective roles on the famed 947 radio station, pending the outcome of the legal case against them.
The two have since been fired by Primedia Broadcasting from their roles on 947. In a statement on Wednesday, Acting CEO of Primedia Broadcasting Geraint Crwys-Williams insisted that the decision had been made for the good of the organisation and that it was not a reflection of the veracity of the r_pe allegations against Euphonik and Fresh.
Below is the full statement from Primedia Broadcasting on the firing of the two DJs.
Primedia Broadcasting can confirm that, after careful consideration of the events of the last few weeks, the company has decided to release DJ Fresh and Euphonik from their contracts. Their last shows on 947 were aired on 15th January and 10th January 2021 respectively.
“This decision does not reflect a view on the veracity of any allegations against either Euphonik or Fresh. Rather it prioritises Primedia Broadcasting’s business imperatives. We believe that this decision is in the best interest of our company and our various stakeholders,” says Geraint Crwys-Williams, Interim CEO of Primedia Broadcasting.
DJ Euphonik released a statement on behalf of the two DJs saying that they had decided to leave 947 after failing to find common ground with Primedia Broadcasting over when they could resume their public engagements. Below is the statement from DJ Fresh and Euphonik on their being fired from 947.
After extensive consultation, legal and otherwise, we have concluded that it is in our best interests to resume all of our public engagements. We look forward to our names being cleared. Unfortunately, we can’t find common ground with Primedia and have agreed a release from our obligations to the broadcaster, with immediate effect. Thank you to Primedia for all the great broadcasting opportunities and moments.
