Justice slams Bushiri

HE was supposed to preach the word of God in church yesterday.

But Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary had a different congregation from their usual one. . . behind bars!

The couple was arrested at the Sparkling Waters Hotel in Rustenburg by the Hawks on Friday.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that the couple was arrested for alleged fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.

“They are expected to appear before the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court today,” he said.

Maynard Monyowa, Bushiri’s spokesman, asked church members to pray for the prophet.

“They took the prophet and our mother prophetess Mary in handcuffs to Pretoria,” said Maynard.

The two were arrested on the same day Bushiri was cleared of any wrondoing by the CRL Rights Commission regarding the stampede that claimed three lives at a church service last year.

The Enlightened Christian Gathering Church was back at the Tshwane Show ground in Pretoria West yesterday, with the police, traffic police and private security officers in attendance.

The church’s Ephraim Nyondo said the congregation is happy to be back for the first time this year. Nyondo told Daily Sun the church traditionally goes into recess for two weeks after Cross Over Night.

“This year, because of the tragedy on 28 December, we added a week to mourn our members who lost their lives,” he said.

Nyondo hoped everybody would follow the CRL Rights Commission’s lead. He said the church belonged to the congregation, and the prophet is one of the ministers. Sanco’s secretary, Portia Mokoena, said they can’t stop people from praying.

“Police assured us that they are still busy with the case.

“We can’t disrupt the church proceedings at the moment,” said Portia.
