Oscar Pistorius will soon be eligible to be released from prison, according to South African law, after serving half of his sentence of 13 years. Pistorius murdered his partner, South African model Reeva Steenkamp, ​​by shooting her through a bathroom door in their home in 2013.

For Pistorius to be released, he must meet with the parents of the victim in a face-to-face deposition. Depending on the outcome of the meeting, the Steenkamps can make a recommendation to South African officials about whether they believe he should receive an early release. According to The Mirror, Pistorius sent Steenkamp’s parents a letter in a move the Steenkamps’ lawyer said was “like ripping a Band-Aid off a wound.”

The South African athletics star denied intending to murder his girlfriend, saying he shot her by mistake, thinking she was an intruder. During his trial, he told the courtroom that he loved Steenkamp and had never intended to kill her. He was first convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison in 2016, but had his sentence extended to 13 years after further evidence came to light.

In 2012, the T44 Paralympic track star, whose feet were amputated as a child, was granted the right to participate in the 400m at the London Olympics.

According to the SABC News, the earliest Pistorius could be released is in late 2022 or 2023, though the meeting date between the two parties has not yet been arranged.
