Shepherd Bushiri, a self-proclaimed prophet and leader of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) church illegally shipped his luxury cars, a Bentley and Maserati to Malawi, the court heard yesterday.
Bushiri is currently in remand prison together with his wife as he battles to be freed on bail following his arrest over R102 million fraud.
Mary Bushiri was arrested at the couple’s Pretoria home on the 20th of October before his husband handed himself over to the Hawks.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said Bushiri and his wife had been arrested for fraud and money laundering.
Bushiri is facing a plethora of problems and has been on bail since last year for fraud, money laundering, and contravention of the prevention of organized crime act relating to the purchase of an aircraft in 2015.
Bushiri remains locked up as his bail bid was postponed yesterday.
Meanwhile, outside the Pretoria magistrate’s court, Bushiri’s supporters and members of his Enlightened Christian Gathering church gathered on Francis Baard Street chanting his name, praying and singing hoping to see their leader released.
