A year ago the SABC denied rumours that it was cancelling Uzalo because its contract with the show’s producers had ended. According to certain media outlets, the production house; Stained Glass Pictures contract with the SABC expired October 2019 which led to confusion over the future of the production.
It is now alleged that the SABC is losing its patience with Uzalo’s boring storylines and is apparently exhausted over complaints from viewers about the shows boring storylines.
The storylines are not only boring but repeated and the continuous firing and hiring of its main and supporting characters and zero character development have left viewers confused.
When Uzalo initially started, it told the story of two families in the township of Kwamashu; the Mdletshe family, who played a significant role in the management of the Kwamashu Kingdom Church, and the Xulu family who ran a car theft syndicate.
The show was initially written by the award-winning; Phathu Makwarela of The River who introduced the connection of these two families’ eldest sons, who were switched at birth during the period when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.
However, things changed dramatically when Phathu left the show to start his own production company and got worse when their long-term head writer; Chris Q. Radebe left the show to star in Isibaya as Dabula.
Uzalo is currently leading in terms of viewership ratings in South Africa just because it’s aired on a free channel and the show uses a language that’s predominantly spoken in South Africa; IsiZulu.
If we removed those two aspects; if Uzalo was placed on Mzansi Magic’s DSTV or ETV for example; the show wouldn’t last two years because of stiff competition; Gomora and Scandal.
The show has tried to boost its storyline by announcing a host of new talent such as a straightforward and brutally honest Belinda Mncube; played by Nina Mkhize who portrays MaNgcobo’s no-nonsense childhood friend. It also welcomed old characters such as Last Number and the Godfathers of Kwamashu, but is it too late?
