SAD: South African Celebrities Who Unexpectedly Lost Their Spouses

Losing a loved one is unfortunately something everyone will experience in their lifetime. Even though we know that death is one of the guaranteed cycles of life, the pain is still insurmountable.

Death is tough for ordinary people to go through but for those who are in the public eye, it seems like it is a whole lot tougher because they have to go through the process in front of the whole world.

When a celebratory dies, there is an outpouring amount of love and grief from the public, and this ‘forces’ the celebrity who lost their loved one to manage their grief as well as the grief of those who loved their spouse.

Over the past few years, some of our local stars have unexpectedly lost their spouses. Take a look at some of the celebs who have had to pick up the pieces in front of millions.

In 2017, Simphiwe Ngema and Dumi Masilela tied the knot in a traditional wedding that trended for days. To the general public, their love story seemed so pure and sincere and they were definitely couple goals for a lot of people.

A few months later, Dumi was tragically murdered in a botched hijacking in Tembisa which resulted in Simz being a widow.

Speaking at Dumi’s funeral, Simphiwe said, “Dumi was perfect, he was one of the perfect people who never worried about anything.”

A couple of years after Dumi’s passing, Simphiwe found love again when she started dating Tino Chinyani, however, the pair who share a son have reportedly separated.

Ayanda Ncwane

Ayanda Ncwane was thrust into the limelight when she was seen in the arms of her late superstar hubby, Sifiso Ncwane, the couple who was one of our favourite fixtures on the red carpet served goals.

In 2016, Sifiso died unexpectedly after a short illness, leaving Ayanda and their two kids behind.

In 2018, Ayanda became a reality star after she joined the first season of The Real Housewives of Durban, however, she did not come back for a second season because she was allegedly not comfortable with where her storyline was heading.

Lerato Sengadi

Many of us met Lerato Sengadi when she was on Big Brother Africa twice which resulted in her being the only South African who has spent close to five months in the Big Brother house.

In her personal life, Lerato was married to Mostwako legend, HHP and the two were the embodiment of black love. Unfortunately, HHP had been battling depression for years and in 2018, he lost the battle.

Connie Ferguson

In 2021, fans were shocked to wake up to the news of Shona Fergusons’ passing. The actor and producer passed away after a battle with Covid 19.

Upon hearing the news, many people thought of his wife, Connie Ferguson. With just a quick glimpse into their Instagram accounts, you could tell that those two were inseparable.

Taking to Instagram on the 6th month anniversary of Shona’s death, Connie wrote, “Six months today, and not a day goes by without me talking about you! To anyone who cares to listen! You have left such a big impression of yourself on me and the girls that you are part of all our conversations.”

She then went on to add, “Your spirit lives on Sho, and we bless God for walking this journey with us,” read the touching tribute below.
