Student protest spreads countrywide

On Thursday, Wits students took their protest to the door of the Constitutional Court.

The protest over funding has also spread to other parts of the country.

Students are angry following Wednesday’s police action against Wits protesters, during which bystander Mthokozisi Ntumba was killed.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the action taken by the police during student protests in Braamfontein is unwarranted.

The chairperson of Parliament’s Police Portfolio Committee, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, has condemned the violence during the Wits student protest.

Joemat-Pettersson says the killing of Mthokozisi Ntumba is unacceptable.

The 35-year-old Ntumba was leaving a clinic in the area of the protest when he was shot.

She is calling for a speedy investigation and has extended condolences to Ntumba’s family.
