Actors are probably some of the most recognizable faces in the country. They grace magazine covers, star in hit shows and movies as well as major campaigns.

Recently, there has been a huge debate regarding the fair remuneration of local actors. Many of our local talents miss out on many financial benefits of their career that their colleagues overseas have. But it’s not bleak for everyone…

Some of our Actors have been able to stack up the rands over their successful careers. So… Who are the richest actors in the country? We are about to show you…

We’ve come up with a list of some of Mzansi’s actors that are making it big in the industry.

1. Sello Maake Ka-Ncube

I am sure you all know Sello Maake Ka-Ncube, if not then I don’t know what to tell you. This man is an icon! From Generations to Scandal, you can’t think of SA actors without his name coming up.

In all the shows and movies that Sello has appeared on, it has been nothing, but stunning work. One of the roles that he has been associated with is the gay role of Kogsi on The Queen, a role that he pulled rather perfectly.

Sello has played various roles in theatre, film, and television both in South Africa and across the US and Europe. He is also a seasoned Director, Producer and Voice Over Artist as well. After decades in the game, he is said to be the richest actor in South Africa.

2. Jamie Bartlett

Jamie Bartlett is a fan favourite! Jamie is also part of that elite crop of SA actors with decades of international film credits under his belt.

Thirteen years ago, lovers of all things soapies, were introduced to the trailblazing, Rhythm City on eTV. From the get-go, the show was a hit – with only the best actors gracing our screens. These actors impressively breathed life to their characters – of which some of them remain iconic.

One such character is that of the antagonistic David Genaro – portrayed by astute actor, Jamie Bartlett. Earlier this year, fans, viewers and cast members had to say goodbye to Jamie as he announced his resignation from Rhythm City. He is moving on to other projects that he has lined up.

The incomparable actor has won himself 3 SAFTAs for his portrayal of David Genaro in the years 2009, 2015 and 2019. With his last performance on the show, which fans described as epic, they couldn’t stop heaping praises on him for a wonderful performance. Some even said he deserved an Ocsar.

Jamie will surely be missed on our screens.

3. Connie Ferguson

Connie Ferguson is a 50-year-old actress born to Fish Masilo and Margaret Masilo on the 10th June 1970. She was born in Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa and was raised in the town of Lobatse, in South-Eastern Botswana.

Aside from Connie’s acting career she also boasts the accolades of being a producer, model, investor, and businesswoman.

Connie starred on a series role in Love By Many Ways in 2003 that earned her a whopping R2.1million.

Connie played a lead role of Karabo Moroka on Generations for 16 years and she left the show on a good note in 2010 and returned 4 years later to assist in its relaunch of Generations: The Legacy.

Connie landed a lead role in the M-Net hit show The Wild, shot on an African game farm, starring alongside her husband Shona Ferguson. The show was however cancelled in April 2013. Connie now stars in one of her own productions, The Queen.

She has several sources of income and the production company, Ferguson Films, brings in the cheques. Connie even has her own beauty products empire which is called, Koni Multinational Brands.

4. Moshidi Motshegwa

Moshidi is definitely one of our most iconic living actresses with a career spanning over 20 years! The SAFTA award winning has been on practically every important soapie, movie and telenovela in the country.

Moshidi has also appeared in so many films and movies and has had her talent recognised internationally too. In 2008 she was said to have voiced the role of Miriam in an animated television series called Speedy, based on the comic strip by cartoonist Tim Mostert which appears in the South African tabloid The Daily Sun.

Her stellar performance on Rhythm City is one that viewers and fans will never forget.

Although viewers had to say goodbye to her last year from The River, her impeccable talent show proved that she is a no nonsense woman and what she says goes. Today she is one of the highest paid actors in Mzansi.

5. Pearl Thusi

Mama Panther is a surprising appearance to many but remember, Pearl doesn’t just act. Pearl is better known for her other lucrative careers like modelling, hosting tv and radio shows, as well as appearing in many rapper’s music videos. All the hats that Pearl wears have turned out to be very lucrative for the star.

Her latest project ‘Queen Sono’ has received the thumbs up from viewers. The action-packed series sees Pearl starring as Queen Sono, a ‘spy working for an undercover South African agency devoted to protecting the people of Africa.’

We still haven’t forgotten that steamy sex scene on #QueenSono of her with Vuyo Dabula and fans are happy that Season 2 is in the works.

Pearl Thusi launched her hair care range, Black Pearl, in 2015. Pearl is known for her trademark afro and it made sense for her to start a line of her own hair products. She partnered with Afro-botanics to create the range. Pearl Thusi’s hair products are still flying off the shelves in 2020.

Between her business ventures, endorsements and movies, Pearl has several sources of income.

6. Sindi Dlathu

South African born actress and musician Sindi Dlathu is best known for portraying the role of ‘Thandaza’,Ranthumeng Mokoena’s wife in a South African soap opera ‘Muvhango’.

When she was 12 years old she entered a talent competition, A Shell Road Fame, she did not win, but she reached the finals. She received mentorship from Mahotella Queens, a member of the famed South African Mbhaqanga band.

Dlathu was cast as the lead role’s understudy in the stage version of Sarafina!, playing to packed houses. In the screen version, she worked alongside Whoopi Goldberg and was commissioned as an assistant choreographer to Michael Peters.

When we watched The River’s first season, we were immediately drawn to the show. Sindi caught our attention as Lindiwe when she tried to bury Tumi (who is her biological daughter on the show, but she didn’t know at that time) alive.

Her Oscar worthy performances have also translated into her becoming one of the highest earning actors in Mzansi. Sindi has also provided a much loved to be hated character that currently does not have comparison anywhere on television.
