Why Rhythm City Should Not Be Cancelled

Rhythm City may have lost its spark throughout the years but it doesn’t deserve to be canned. There are so many other nonsensical shows that should definitely be canned instead of Rhythm City. Like ETV’s latest medical drama; Durban Gen, Mzansi Magic’s; The Queen and Isibaya, SABC’s; Uzalo and Muvhango.

Rhythm City’s ratings have always been good and sometimes really, really good. So ending the show on a high note after 13 years is a cop-out. That’s like a cheating husband of 13 years divorcing his wife because he’s bored. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with his wife but the husband wants out because he’s bored.

According to reports, Rhythm City will be replaced with another show; ETV must not move Durban Gen on Rhythm City’s timeslot, they must get a better show.

Rhythm City was different from a lot of local soapies because it promoted local music and musicians. Canning the show won’t affect only actors but local artists too. The show not only played local music but gave upcoming artists a platform. We discovered new jams because of the show and the storylines were relatable.

And everyone knows that Jamie Bartlett who played David Genaro was Rhythm City!

Here’s a path down memory lane:

Remember when Suffocate broke into Miles Vilakasi’s home to steal equipment to start the Kilowatt Klub with the complicity of Sbusiso Vilakasi who was Miles’s son?

What about the time Naomi Fischer kidnapped Miles and Lucila’s baby; Ma’Thousand? She hid in the basement, plotting to bomb the entire house. Naomi was brilliant and psychotic, she could be singing gospel songs while committing the evilest thing: “Hae duma ya tsamaya, koloi ya Eliyah.”

The cancellation of Rhythm City should give other shows a stern warning that the format of traditional soapies has fallen out of favour with the viewers. Viewers prefer novellas which also shoot on location, bring new storylines every season and fresh faces.
