DSTV Premiership : PSL Announces DStv As New League Sponsor

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has a new sponsor and name. After months of back of forth negotiations, it was announced that DSTV is now the official sponsor of the PSL, formerly known as the Absa Premisership.

The Premier Soccer League announced the league’s new title sponsor.

PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza announced that pay-TV company DStv will be the league’s new sponsor.

The Premier Division of the PSL will be known as the DStv Premiership. MultiChoice, which operates DStv, already holds PSL broadcast rights through its sports channel SuperSport and also owns a team that plays in the league, SuperSport United.

Banking giants Absa and the PSL ended their nearly 15-year partnership at the end of last season, opening the door for a new sponsor. The announcement will most affect SABC the most as they are DSTV’s competitors. This will mean they have to mention DSTV Premiership when broadcasting their matches and also buy the licence from DSTV.

The new season is due to commence next month.

Twitter reactions to the new announcement varied.

As the new DSTV Premiserhip starts, many people are excited to share their love of football and commitment. Sundowns currently hold the PSL league cup. It remains to be seen which tema will have their name engraved first on the DSTV Premiership trophy.
