A tragic incident unfolded in the Angelo informal settlement in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, as 24 people lost their lives after inhaling a highly toxic gas on Thursday, July 6, 2023. The incident is believed to be linked to illegal mining activities in the area.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, William Ntladi, confirmed the devastating event, stating that the victims were discovered in various shacks within the settlement.

Reports emerged when a resident alerted authorities about a strange smell and individuals collapsing.
In response, the EMS swiftly dispatched 12 ambulances and a hazardous material unit to the scene. The investigation revealed that a nearby mine shaft was the source of the lethal gas leak, suspected to be methane—a highly flammable and toxic gas.
Ntladi disclosed that the police are actively investigating allegations of illegal mining activities contributing to the gas leak.
