Lawyer Arrested for Girlfriend’s Murder, Social Media Post Sparks Outrage
Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi (30), a lawyer, has been arrested in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, Mahlako Malebo Rabalao (27).
Her charred remains were found in a car in Midrand in March 2023.
Mpisi’s heartfelt Facebook post mourning her loss resurfaced during his court appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 July, triggering backlash on social media.
The message read:
Rest in peace my love. The pain I’m in is so deep. I don’t know where to begin to start picking up the pieces. How do I raise Beanie ungekho? I thank God for giving me the time we’ve shared together, nothing can ever take that away.
According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, Mpisi was arrested in KZN on Friday, 28 July, following a warrant for his arrest that had been issued nine days earlier.
Gauteng police spokesman Gauteng Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo stated that the investigations revealed Mahlako was killed and burnt inside the vehicle, and the suspect is her boyfriend.
Mpisi’s next court appearance is scheduled for 7 August.
He remains in custody pending a possible bail hearing.
