SIU Investigates Tycoon Edwin Sodi A Day After His Lavish Birthday Party

SIU Investigates Multimillion-Rand Water Project Linked to Businessman Edwin Sodi

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has launched a probe into a multimillion-rand water project awarded to businessman Edwin Sodi.

This announcement comes shortly after Sodi’s extravagant 50th birthday celebration at his lavish mansion in Bryanston, Johannesburg.

Investigation Into Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Project

The SIU revealed that it has been authorized to investigate the Rooiwal wastewater treatment project.

This project’s tender was granted to Blackhead Consulting, co-owned by Edwin Sodi and two other companies.

The project, which cost the Tshwane metro R295 million, was left incomplete due to various factors, including alleged corruption and financial mismanagement.

Recovery of Wasted Funds

President Cyril Ramaphosa signed Proclamation R 138 of 2023, granting the SIU the authority to investigate allegations of maladministration and corruption within the Tshwane metropolitan municipality.

The investigation aims to recover any financial losses incurred by the state as a result of this project.

The SIU’s investigation extends to uncovering any unauthorized, irregular, or fruitless and wasteful expenditure by the Tshwane metropolitan municipality or the state.

It also covers any unlawful or improper conduct by officials, employees, suppliers, service providers, or any other entities involved.

Lavish Birthday Amid Controversy

Edwin Sodi celebrated his 50th birthday with a grand event attended by notable figures such as actress Karen Zulu, media personality Babalwa Mneno, and businessman Matome Sefalafala.

The extravagant party took place at his triple-story mansion, which was listed for sale for R85 million on Property24 in 2022.

The celebration featured opulent gold decor and black and gold balloons, extensively shared on social media.

Controversial Past

Sodi has been previously entangled in high-profile legal cases, including a botched asbestos removal contract.

The Rooiwal wastewater plant refurbishment was intended to provide clean drinking water to parts of Tshwane, but it was marred by issues and was linked to a cholera outbreak that resulted in at least 15 deaths.

As the SIU delves into the water project, Edwin Sodi’s birthday extravaganza remains a topic of interest amid ongoing controversies.
